Set in the 1940s in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana, A Christmas Story follows the humorous holiday adventures of nine-year-old Ralphie Parker, whose one all-consuming desire is to receive a “Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle” for Christmas. Ralphie’s quest is met with universal resistance, as every adult—from his mother to his teacher and even a department store Santa—warns him, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” The film is narrated by an adult Ralphie reflecting on his childhood, detailing the trials and tribulations of the season, which include battling school bullies, managing his younger brother Randy’s persistent fear of having his face pressed into his dinner, and dealing with his father’s (The Old Man) endless, often frustrating, feuds with their furnace and a prize-winning but hideous leg lamp.

As Christmas Day finally approaches, Ralphie faces various comical setbacks, including a disastrous attempt to write an essay for school and an incident where he curses in front of his father. Despite all the obstacles and the apparent disappointment of the presents initially received on Christmas morning, a final, seemingly overlooked gift box contains the coveted Red Ryder BB gun. The film concludes with Ralphie enjoying his prized possession, only to have the prophesied mishap—a ricocheting BB hitting his glasses—occur almost immediately, which he cleverly covers up. It remains a beloved, nostalgic look at the often messy, yet heartfelt, traditions of a classic American family Christmas.
