CHRISTMAS MOVIE: CHRISTMAS VACATION
THE ARROWWOOD7:30 PM – 9:30 PM
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation follows Clark Griswold, a Chicago suburbanite and enthusiastic family man, as he attempts to create the most perfect, old-fashioned Christmas celebration for his family. His vision for the holiday includes a massive tree, a house draped in 25,000 twinkle lights, and an elaborate bonus check from his boss to finance a swimming pool. From the moment the film begins, Clark’s best intentions are hilariously thwarted by a series of escalating disasters. His attempts to find the perfect Christmas tree result in a chaotic venture into the snowy wilderness, and his monumental effort to light the entire house leads to a massive neighborhood power outage that he struggles to fix. The stress is compounded by the arrival of his perpetually bickering in-laws and the sudden, unannounced arrival of his crude, freeloading cousin Eddie and his family, who show up in an RV and immediately park it on Clark’s lawn.
As Clark’s meticulous plans unravel, his frustration boils over, especially when the holiday bonus check he desperately needs fails to materialize. The arrival of Cousin Eddie’s sewage hose, the accidental trapping of a squirrel in the house, and the burning of the oversized Christmas turkey all contribute to Clark’s spiraling holiday breakdown. The final straw comes when Clark realizes his boss has withheld the Christmas bonus entirely, leading to a meltdown where Clark demands that Cousin Eddie kidnap the boss and bring him to the house. The sight of his terrified boss bound and gagged ultimately forces Clark to confront his obsession with perfection. Despite all the chaos and mayhem, the family ultimately pulls together, proving that even a disastrous Griswold Christmas is still a memorable, albeit explosive, one.
